McNicol Clinches Win with Victory at No. 2 Singles
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team posted a 6-3 non-conference win over visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shorewomen improved to 5-8 with the win, while the Seahawks fell to 13-10 with the loss.
The Shorewomen picked up the first point of the match when freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) finished an 8-0 win over Shannon Ramsey and Mary Rau at No. 2 doubles. Washington's lead grew to 2-0 when senior Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) and freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) completed an 8-5 win over Lauren Rost and Emily Stumpfig at No. 1. St. Mary's picked up a point at No. 3 as Anna Passaniti and Chelsea Bradcovich defeated senior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford), 8-6.
McIntyre was unable to play singles, so the Shorewomen defaulted at No. 6. Washington won the first three singles matches to finish, however, to clinch the victory and take a 5-2 lead. Kang beat Passaniti, 6-0, 6-2, Cohen downed Lauren Rost, 6-3, 6-2, and McNicol got the clincher with a 6-0, 7-5, victory over Stumpfig at No. 2. Emily Rost earned the Seahawks' third point with a 6-0, 6-1, win over Stevens at No. 5, while Weaver provided the final margin with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-1, win over Ramsey at No. 1.
The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Haverford.
