Weaver Wins in Singles & Doubles for Shorewomen
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Swarthmore College, the seventh-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, defeated host Washington College, 6-3, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Garnet improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen slid to 3-5 and 2-2 with the loss.
Lia Carlson and Emily Rosenblum picked up Swarthmore's first point with an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles over senior Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) and freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom). Jackie Lane and Kelsey Johnson then put the Garnet up 2-0 with an 8-3 victory over senior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) at No. 2. The Shorewomen picked up a point at No. 2 where freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) improved to 8-0 with an 8-4 triumph over Katie Samuelson and Brooke Wilkins.
Swarthmore increased its lead to 4-1 with a 6-2, 6-0, win by Samuelson over Kang at No. 4 and a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Cohen at No. 3. The Garnet clinched the victory when Wilkins finished off a 6-2, 6-3, win over Stevens at No. 6. Rosenblum supplied Swarthmore's sixth point with a 6-3, 6-1, win over McNicol at No. 2. Weaver earned Washington's second point with a 7-6(5), 6-1, triumph over Carlson at No. 1. McIntyre added the Shorewomen's third point with a 7-5, 5-7, 10-5, win at No. 5.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Muhlenberg.
