Shorewomen Double Up Diplomats, 6-3

McIntyre Clinches Victory with Win at No. 5 Singles

LANCASTER, PA -- Visiting Washington College defeated host Franklin & Marshall, 6-3, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match this afternoon in Lancaster, PA. The Shorewomen evened their overall record at 3-3 and improved to 2-1 in Centennial Conference play with the win, while the Diplomats fell to 3-3 and 1-1 with the loss.

Washington won at the top two doubles spots as senior Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) and freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) pulled out a 9-7 win over Anya Sahaydachny and Megan FitzMaurice at No. 1 and freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) were 8-6 winners over Dana Sleeper and Meredith Lackey at No. 2. F&M won at No. 3 as Emily Gruenberg and Julia Fiala downed senior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford), 8-2.

F&M evened the score at 2-2 when Fiala completed a 6-2, 6-1, win over Cophen at No. 3 singles, but McNicol put the Shorewomen back in front, 3-2, with a 6-1, 6-2, victory against Sleeper at No. 2. F&M again tied the score when Naomi Smith finished a 6-1, 6-1, win over Stevens at No. 6. Washington regained the lead at 4-3 with Weaver finishing a 6-2, 6-0, win over Sahaydachny at No. 1. McIntyre then clinched the victory for the Shorewomen with a 6-4, 6-3, win over Lackey at No. 5. Kang provided the final point with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, triumph against Gruenberg at No. 4.

The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. non-conference match at The College of New Jersey.
