McNicol Clinches Win with Victory at No. 2 Singles
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The host Washington College women's tennis team defeated visiting Ursinus, 7-2, in a Centennial Conference match today inside the Johnson Fitness Center. The Shorewomen improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the win, while the Bears fell to 4-4 and 0-1.
The Shorewomen dominated doubles play. Freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) cruised to an 8-0 win over BreAnna Bashaw and Stephanie-Jane Seabra at No. 2 and senior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) were 8-1 winners over Audrey Whitebloom and Renee Tornea at No. 3. Senior Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) and freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) finished off doubles with an 8-2 win over Heather McMasters and Jessica Tyrrell at No. 1.
Weaver increased the lead to 4-0 with a quick 6-1, 6-1, win over McMasters at No. 1 singles, while McNicol clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-2, triumph against Whitebloom at No. 2. Cohen then finished a 6-4, 6-3, win over Tyrrell at No.3 to make the score 6-0 before the Bears got on the board with a 6-2, 3-6, 11-9, win by Bashaw against Kang at No. 4. Ursinus got its second point at No. 6 singles as Caroline Lippe bested Stevens, 8-3. McIntyre finished off the match when she completed a 6-1, 6-1, win over Seabra at No. 6.
Today's victory for the Shorewomen snapped a three-match losing streak; all three of those losses had been by 5-4 final scores. Washington's previous win
