Weaver and Kang Win in Singles and Doubles
NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- Host Christopher Newport defeated visiting Washington College, 5-4, in a non-conference women's tennis match today in Newport News, VA. The Captains improved to 4-4 with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 1-2 with the loss.
Washington picked up the first point of the match as freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) breezed to an 8-1 win over Melisande Downs and Jodi Noland at No. 2. Christopher Newport then finished an 8-3 win by Marion Gloor and Kim Morrissett over seniors Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) at No. 1 to even the score at 1-1. The Captains took a 2-1 lead when Jackie Gaine and Angela Stallman completed an 8-6 win over freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) at No. 3.
Stallman pushed the lead to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-1, victory over Stevens at No. 6 and Noland brought the Captains to within a point of clinching the match with a 6-1, 6-3, victory over Cohen at No. 3. Weaver recorded the Shorewomen's second point with a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Morrissett at No. 1 and Kang made the score 4-3 with a 7-5, 6-4, victory over Downs at No. 4. Christopher Newport clinched the victory when Gaine completed a 6-2, 7-5, win over McIntyre at No. 5. McNicol provided the final margin with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, triumph over Gloor at No. 2.
The Shorewomen return to action March 23rd with their Centennial Conference opener, a 12:00 p.m. match at Dickinson.
