McIntyre Wins in Singles & Doubles
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- Host Virginia Wesleyan rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to earn a 5-4 victory over visiting Washington College in a non-conference women's tennis match this afternoon in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins improved to 2-5 with the win, while the Shorewomen dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
Washington held a 2-1 lead after doubles. The Marlins picked up a win at No. 1 as Victoria Ryherd and Sara Yousif beat seniors Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School), 8-4, but the Shorewomen won at the bottom two spots. Freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) were 8-2 winners over Victoria Torres and Mia Proctor at No. 2, while freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) bested Hannah Parent and Stephanie Bittner, 8-4, at No. 3.
Virginia Wesleyan tied the score when Ryherd beat McNicol, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2, but Washington took a 3-2 lead when Cohen completed a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, victory at No. 3. Yousif evened the score at 3-3 with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, victory at No. 1. McIntyre gave the Shorewomen a 4-3 advantage with a 6-2, 6-0, win at No. 5. The Marlins then won the final two singles matches to finish to take the win at Proctor beat Kang, 7-6(4), 7-5, and Bittner rallied to top Stevens, 0-6, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6.

The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 2:00 p.m. match at Christopher Newport.
