Shorewomen Edge Gophers, 5-4, in Opener
McNicol Clinches Win with Victory at No. 2 Singles
TOWSON, MD -- Senior Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-3, win over Meaghan Lee at No. 2 singles as visiting Washington College posted a 5-4 win over host Goucher in the Shorewomen's dual match opener this afternoon in Towson, MD.
The Shorewomen took the bottom two spots in doubles to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) were 8-0 winners over Alex Walsh and Addie Maxwell at No. 2, while freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) defeated Kelsey Turner and Hanora Barron, 8-2. Goucher won at No. 1 as Ariel Lin and Lee were 8-3 winners over senior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and McNicol.
Washington took a 3-1 lead when McIntyre finished a 6-1, 6-1, win over Turner at No. 5 singles, but the Gophers trimmed the margin to 3-2 when Ruff completed a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Stevens at No. 6. Maxwell evened the match score at 3-3 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, win over Cohen at No. 4 and the Gophers took a 4-3 lead after Walsh finished a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, win over Kang at No. 3. The Shorewomen evened the score with Weaver's 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, win over Lin at No. 1 before McNicol won the match by finishing her victory at No. 2
The Shorewomen return to action Friday with their home opener, a 3:00 p.m. match against St. Mary's.
