Kang, Cohen & Weaver Are Draw Winners at ITA Southeast Regionals
FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Freshman Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) won Blue 6 Draw singles, while senior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) won Blue 2 Draw doubles to lead the Washington College women's tennis team at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships this weekend at the University of Mary Washington.
Kang opened play in Blue 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Caitlin Hoerr of Hollins in the first round. She then bested Christopher Newport's Jessica Clark, 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals before defeating Elizabethtown's Adriana Scotto, 6-3, 7-5, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Kang bested Catholic's Emma Needham, 6-0, 6-2.
Cohen and Weaver opened Blue 2 doubles play with an 8-4 win over Juniata's Megan Phillips and Heather Waring. They then beat Franklin & Marshall's Julia Fiala and Meredith Lackey, 8-4, in the quarterfinals before defeating Christopher Newport's Melisande Downs and Angela Stallman, 8-4, in the semifinals. Cohen and Weaver won the final by default.
In singles play, Cohen and Weaver competed in Championship Draw. Cohen lost to Washington and Lee's Kerry Cotter, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round. She then beat Catholic's Elaina Sceusa, 8-4, in the first consolation round before losing, 8-0, to Carnegie Mellon's Alex Tapak in the second consolation round. Weaver lost to Sydney Lehman of Johns Hopkins, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round. She then beat Salisbury's Roxy Alban, 8-2, in the first consolation round before beating Dickinson's Shannon Lavery by an 8-3 count in the second consolation round. In the consolation quarterfinals, Weaver fell to Albright's Victoria Foanio, 8-2.
In Blue 2 singles, freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) lost to Salisbury's Allison Lutz, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round. She then beat North Carolina Wesleyan's Katie Beeman, 8-1, in the consolation quarterfinals and Roanoke's Lexi Deverich, 8-3, in the consolation semifinals. In the consolation final, Olivia Kasten of Johns Hopkins beat McIntyre, 8-4.
In Blue 7 singles, senior Kelsey Mills (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-South Dorchester) lost to Roanoke's Kaity Diskerud, 6-0, 6-4, in the first round before beating Juniata's Mistuki Koh, 8-3, in the consolation quarterfinals. In the consolation semifinals, Mills lost to Christopher Newport's Emily Draheim, 9-7.
McIntyre and Kang competed in Blue 1 Draw doubles. After receiving a first-round bye, they lost to Shannon Libaw and Kaitlin Pfisterer of Johns Hopkins, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. In the consolation quarterfinals, they lost to Allegheny's Mikaela Pope and Sloane Prince, 8-2.
