Shorewomen Dethrone King's, 4-2

Smith Scores Twice to Lead Shorewomen

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior midfielder/forward Heather Smith (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) scored two goals to lead host Washington College to a 4-2 non-conference women's soccer win over visiting King's College tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.

King's (2-5-1) got on the scoreboard at 14:40 when Lindsey Humanik placed a ball off the left post that just got across the goal line. The Monarchs increased their lead to 2-0 on a shot to the opposite corner by Ivy Nulton at 16:57 off an assist from Shaina Dougherty.

Smith scored on a penalty kick at 18:53 to put the Shorewomen (4-4) on the board and then evened the score with a 35-yard blast at the 40:13 mark. Junior midfielder Brittany Weaver (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport) registered her first career assist on the play.

Senior forward Katie Bradley (Havre de Grace, MD/Fallston) scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal for the Shorewomen at 55:19. Bradley received a pass from sophomore midfielder/forward Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep) and placed the ball in the upper left corner of the net. Patinella added Washington's fourth goal when she knocked in a rebound of a shot by senior forward Ainsley Boynton (Radnor, PA/Westtown School) at 79:09.

The Shorewomen held an 18-8 advantage in shots in the game. Each team had four corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Potochney (Newark, DE/Newark) made four saves in the win for the Shorewomen. Jessica Natale made one save while playing the first half for King's, while Erin Dempsey made four saves in the second half.

Tonight's win was Washington's first victory while giving up more than one goal in a contest since a 3-2 overtime win over Notre Dame (MD) on September 2nd, 2006. The Shorewomen also trailed, 2-0, in that game before rallying for the victory.

The Shorewomen return to action one week from today with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Swarthmore.
