INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Selections and heat assignments for the NCAA Division III Rowing Championship, to be held May 26th and 27th in West Windsor, N.J., were announced this evening. While the 11th-ranked Washington College women's rowing team secured an automatic bid to the championship by winning the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference Championship last month, the Shorewomen tonight learned which teams would be filling out the field as well as who their first and second varsity eights would face in the event's heats.
Six teams (the Shorewomen are joined by top-ranked NESCAC Champion Bates, third-ranked Ithaca, fourth-ranked Williams, sixth-ranked NEWMAC Champion Wellesley, and eighth-ranked Liberty League Champion RIT in the field) will vie for the NCAA Division III Rowing Championship by competing in both the I Eight and II Eight events. Two additional schools (second-ranked Wesleyan and fifth-ranked Pacific Lutheran) received at-large eight bids and will race in the I Eight only.
The I and II Eights will each conduct two heats (three boats in each heat in the II Eights, four in each heat in the I Eights) on the morning of Friday, May 26th. The Shorewomen's first varsity eight will compete against Bates, Pacific Lutheran, and Wellesley in its heat at 8:12 a.m., while the second varsity eight will compete against Wellesley and Williams in its heat at 8:48 a.m.
The top two boats in each heat of the I Eight and first-place boat of each heat of the II Eight will advance directly to their respective grand finals. The remaining four boats in each event will compete in repechage races on Friday afternoon at 3:48 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. for the II and I Eights, respectively.
The top two boats from the repechage races will then advance to the grand finals. The remaining boats will race in the petite finals. All of the finals will be held on Saturday, May 27th. The finals schedule is as follows:
11:00 a.m.: II Eights Petite Final (places 5-6)
11:12 a.m.: II Eights Grand Final (places 1-4)
11:24 a.m.: I Eights Petite Final (places 7-8)
11:36 a.m.: I Eights Grand Final (places 1-6)
