Washington Edged Out by #7 Marietta, Beats #5 Trinity in Division III Varsity Eight
CHERRY HILL, NJ -- The 12th-ranked Washington College women's rowing team finished second in both the Division III varsity eight and the Division III varsity four at the Knecht Cup, held yesterday and today on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, NJ.
The Shorewomen's varsity eight won its heat in 6:58.19 to advance to the final. Rochester was second in 7:10.00, Bryn Mawr was third in 7:22.57, The College of New Jersey was fourth in 7:39.99, and Mary Washington was fifth in 8:00.32. In the final, seventh-ranked Marietta edged out the Shorewomen for first place, finishing in 6:44.30 to Washington's 6:45.33. Rochester was third in 7:02.28, Vassar fourth in 7:24.06, The College of New Jersey fifth in 7:27.40, and fifth-ranked Trinity sixth in 7:28.95.
In the women's varsity four Division III event, the Shorewomen's "A" boat was third in its heat in 8:32.29 to qualify for the final of the event. The College of New Jersey was first in 8:13.79, Marietta was second in 8:23.88, Sarah Lawrence was fourth in 8:48.93, and Haverford was fifth in 9:18.54. The Shorewomen's "A" boat took second in the final in 7:57.88. Bryn Mawr won the race in 7:50.27, Vassar "A" was third in 8:01.58, The College of New Jersey was fourth in 8:14.73, Marietta was fifth in 8:26.01, and Carnegie Mellon was sixth in 8:30.70. The Shorewomen's "B" boat in the event was fourth of five boats in its heat in 8:52.29. Bryn Mawr was first in 7:52.17, Vassar "A" was second in 8:13.24, Brandeis was third in 8:46.31, and Mary Washington was fifth in 9:30.78.
Senior Kelsie Jensen (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's varsity eight. Freshman Kelly Bird (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) sat stroke, senior Kendall Mulligan (Southbury, CT/Westover School) was in the seven seat, freshman Taira Sullivan (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) was in the six seat, sophomore Valeria DiLisi (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) sat in the five seat, junior Kate Fiori (Boston, MA/Dana Hall School) was in the four seat, sophomore Elizabeth Hilton (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) sat in the three seat, freshman Ashley Myles (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts) was in the two seat, and junior Rachel Benders (Cleveland Heights, OH/Beaumont School) was the bow.
Freshman Samantha Mason (Preston, CT/Norwich Free Academy) served as coxswain of the Shorewomen's varsity four "A" boat. Junior Lauren Halla (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) sat stroke, freshman Mickey Fili (Sparks, MD/Hereford) was in the three seat, freshman Rachel Dilliplane (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) was in the two seat, and freshman Krystal Brostek (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) was the bow.
Sophomore Abigail Thomas (Hughesville, MD/Thomas Stone) served as coxswain of the Shorewomen's varsity four "B" boat. Sophomore Emily Sahadeo (College Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) sat stroke, sophomore Carly Ogren (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) was in the three seat, sophomore Katherine McCarthy (Valley Forge, PA/Conestoga) sat in the two seat, and sophomore Allie Everhart (New Market, MD/Linganore) was the bow.
The Shorewomen return to action next Saturday and Sunday at the Worcester Invitational in Worcester, MA.
