Espinosa Scores 19 Points, Hubley Swipes Nine Steals
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Freshman guard Ashley Espinosa (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) scored a game-high 19 points and sophomore guard Emily Hubley (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) swiped a career-best nine steals and scored a career-best 10 points as the Washington College women's basketball team defeated visiting Dickinson, 61-45, in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game this afternoon at Cain Athletic Center.
Neither team led by more than five points in the first half as the Shorewomen (7-6, 5-3 Centennial) took a 20-18 lead into the locker room.
Washington held a 28-25 lead with under 15 minutes to play in the second half before going on a 12-2 run to build a 40-27 cushion following a three-pointer by Espinosa with 11:44 to go. The Red Devils (7-4, 3-4) briefly cut the lead to five points later in the half, but could get no closer.
Espinosa shot 8-for-13 from the field and made both of her free throw attempts in the game. Hubley's nine steals were two shy of the Washington College school record of 11 set by Megan Miller in 1996. Junior forward Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) added seven points and a game-best 12 boards, while junior guard Kelly Mitchell (Laurel, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) scored eight points, grabbed six boards, and handed out four assists in the win.
Belma Mekic led the Red Devils with 15 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, while Bridget Borgese added 11 points and eight boards.
The Shorewomen held the Red Devils to 29% shooting in the game and held a commanding 54-38 advantage on the glass.
The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Johns Hopkins.
