Shorewomen Split In First Day of Centennial Softball Tournament
Top Ursinus 3-2 In Game Two For First-Ever Tournament Victory
WESTMINSTER, MD – Washington College split a pair of games at the first day of the 2012 Centennial Conference Softball Tournament at McDaniel College Softball Field on the campus of McDaniel. The Shorewomen lost the first game to Gettysburg, 4-1, but rallied to down Ursinus in the first elimination game, 3-2. Washington is now 20-19 on the season.
In game one, Gettysburg (21-15) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Abby Ferguson doubled to left-center with one away to score Catrina DelGais from second base for the tournament's opening run. In the bottom of the second, Washington loaded the bases with one out, but failed to score.
In the last of the third inning, the Shorewomen tied the game when freshman Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep) socked a solo home run to left-center with one out to knot the game at 1-1. It was Washington's first ever home run in the Centennial Conference Softball Tournament.
DelGais made it 2-1 in the top of the fourth when she scored on a throwing error with two outs to put the Bullets back out in front.
Two innings later, Gettysburg made it 3-1 when Ferguson singled to right field to plate Alexa Katz with one out and then DelGais came home to score from third base on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 4-1.
DelGais was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Ferguson was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Bullets. Joy Hallfors also had a pair of hits for Gettysburg as they had seven hits in the win. In the circle, Lindsey Treanor got the win and improves to 10-5. She went the distance, scattering five hits, walking one and striking out four while giving up just one run.
For the Shorewomen, freshman Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) took the loss and falls to 10-6. She gave up four runs, three earned, seven hits, while fanning five. At the plate, freshman Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, CO/Lewis-Palmer) had two hits.
In game two, Ursinus (23-18) took the lead, 1-0, in the bottom of the first when Kate Kehoe drew a bases loaded walk to score Rachel Vietheer.
In the top of the fourth, Washington got even at 1-1 when sophomore Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) laced a single to left to plate Patinella from second base with one out.
In the top of the fifth, the Shorewomen took their first lead of the game when Patinella roped a two-run single to center that scored senior Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) and freshman Molly Gallagher (Abingdon, MD/Edgewood) to put WC up 3-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bears cut it to 3-2 on a two-out double to left-center by Cassie Brown that scored Kelly Schymanski. But that was as close as the Bears would get as Cooper retired Ursinus in order in the last of the seventh to preserve the win, including a diving grab by Snover at third base for the second out. With the loss, Ursinus was eliminated from the tournament.
Patinella sparked the Washington offense going 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win. Cooper got the win in the circle and improves to 11-6 on the year. She tossed her second complete game of the day, scattering four hits, walking three and punching out two. She gave just two earned runs.
For the Bears, Jennilyn Weber took the loss in the circle and drops to 14-10 on the year. She went the entire way, giving up seven hits, three runs, two earned, walking and striking out two.
The Shorewomen will play the loser of Gettysburg-McDaniel on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. on the campus of McDaniel in an elimination game of the double elimination tournament.
