Shorewomen Snap Losing Streak To Bears In Doubleheader Split
WC Downs Ursinus For The First Time Since 2001
COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Visiting Washington College and host Ursinus split a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Eleanor Frost Snell Alumnae Field. The Shorewomen won the first game, 2-0, while the Bears took game two, 4-2. Washington is now 14-11 overall and 6-2 in the conference, while Ursinus is now 12-9 and 2-2 respectively.
With the win in game one, Washington snapped a 22-game losing streak to Ursinus dating back to April 10, 2001. The Shorewomen's last win over the Bears was a 7-5 win in game one on that day.
In game one, the Shorewomen struck for a run in the top of the first inning when freshman Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep) doubled home fellow classmate Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, CO/Lewis-Palmer) with one out to put WC up 1-0.
Patinella put WC up by two runs in the top of the sixth when she scored on a one out single to left off the bat of sophomore Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) to put the guests up 2-0.
The Bears had the tying run at the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh following a single by Cassie Brown, but a groundout to shortstop by Jennilyn Weber and pop out to short by Kelsey Coyne ended the game and gave.
Cooper, who improves to 7-2, was the story of game one as she struck out eight, allowed just three hits and walking one while tossing her first collegiate complete game shutout. Cooper retired the side in order on three occasions. At the plate, Anderson and Patinella each had two hits and a run scored.
Weber was the hard luck loser for Ursinus in game one as she allowed only seven hits, two earned runs while striking out six. She falls to 7-5.
In game two, Ashley Gentile scored on an error by Washington with two away to put the Bears up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
Ursinus scored twice with outs in the last of the third to grab a 3-0 lead. Samantha Sinisi singled through the left side to score Ashley Pfrommer to make it 2-0 and Brown scored on a double by Abby Lido to push the lead to 3-0.
However in the last of the fifth, Caitlin Higgins singled to right field with two away to score Brown and gave the hosts a 4-2 lead and capped the scoring in game two.
WC did have the tying run at the plate with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Kylie Nottingham lined out to Sido at second base to end the contest.
In game two for the Bears, Kelly Schymanski went the distance and improves to 4-3. She scattered six hits, allowing two earned runs, walking two and striking out six. At the plate, Gentile, Pfrommer and Sido each had two hits in the victory. Ursinus had nine hits in game two.
For the Shorewomen, Patinella had two hits, while Anderson drove in two runs. In the circle, senior Jill Piasecki (Galena, MD/Kent County) took the loss and drops to 5-3. She allowed three runs, two earned, in 3 2/3 innings.
Washington travels to Dickinson for a Centennial Conference softball twinbill on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
