Washington College Sailing Finishes 14th at Moody Trophy

WAKEFIELD, RI - The Washington College sailing team finished 14th of 18 teams at the Moody Trophy, a co-ed intersectional regatta, hosted by the University of Rhode Island this weekend.

Junior skipper Mike Whitford (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) drove Washington to a ninth-place finish in A Division, sailing with senior crew Caroline Hill (Tiverton, RI/Bishop Stang) in the first 10 races of the division and senior crew Max Kurland (Sharon, CT/Hotchkiss School) in the final three races. Whitford and Kurland finished third in the 12th A Division race.

In B Division, sophomore skipper Mildred Conroy (Newton, MA/Tabor Academy) sailed with freshman crew Sam Fitzgerald (Fairfield, CT/Green Farms Academy) in the first two and final five races and sophomore crew Matt Lawler (Alexandria, VA/Christchurch School) in races three through eight.  Washington was 15th in B Division.

Sixth-ranked Yale won the Moody Trophy, while fifth-ranked Harvard was second and third-ranked St. Mary's was third. Eight A Division and six B Division races were sailed on Saturday in a shifty westerly of 0-14 knots. The remaining races on Sunday sailed in a building breeze which shifted from the west to the southwest.

The Washington College sailing team will host the Washington College Open next weekend and will also compete at the Navy Fall Intersectional.
