CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Swarthmore College, the sixth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, defeated host Washington College, the 20th-ranked team in the region, 9-0, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match today in Chestertown, Md. The Garnet improved to 10-7 overall and 7-1 in conference matches with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 8-7 and 5-3 with the loss.
The Garnet notched the first point of the match when Irving Stone and John Larkin completed an 8-2 win over senior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) and freshman Zachary Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) at No. 3 doubles. An 8-5 win by Christian Carcione and Max Kaye against junior Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) and freshman Jeremy Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) at No. 2 doubles upped the Swarthmore lead to 2-0. The Garnet completed the doubles sweep when Anthony Collard and Thomas Vernier put the finishing touches on an 8-5 win against junior Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) and senior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [Fla.]) at No. 1.
Collard, the region's 11th-ranked singles player, started off singles play with his 6-1, 6-0, win over Rajes at No. 1. Stone clinched the win for Swarthmore when he completed a 6-0, 6-1, victory against Holtschneider at No. 4. Larkin increased the margin to 6-0 with his 6-0, 6-2, win against Joel Novick at No. 3, while Kaye, ranked 15th in the region in singles, downed Cywinski, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2. Vernier then blanked Zachary Novick, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 and Carcione accounted for the final point with his 7-6(5), 6-1, win against Jeremy Novick at No. 5.
The Shoremen wrap up their regular season Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. Centennial Conference home match against Johns Hopkins, the sixth-ranked team in all of Division III.
