SWARTHMORE, PA -- Host Swarthmore College, ranked 26th in Division III and seventh in the Atlantic South region, blanked visiting Washington College, 9-0, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match this afternoon. The Garnet improved to 10-8 overall and 6-2 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 6-10 and 3-5 with the loss.
In doubles, Max Kaye and Max Sacks beat junior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and sophomore Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) at No. 1 and Malik Mubeen and Anthony Collard bested sophomores Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall) at No. 2 by identical 8-6 scores. At No. 3, Christian Carcione and James Wieler downed junior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) and senior Andrew Pearson (Flourtown, PA/Springfield Township), 8-4.
Novick played the most competitive singles match, falling to Stone at No. 4, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7. The Garnet lost a total of just six games in the other five singles matches total. Collard, the region's seventh-ranked player, beat Rajes, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1, Sacks downed Cywinski, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2, and Preston Poon beat Holtschneider, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3. Mubeen added a 6-1, 6-0, win over Pearson at No. 5, while Wieler got past junior Hunter Scott (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford), 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Shoremen close out the 2013 season Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. Centennial match at nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins.
