Holtschneider Clinches Victory with Win at No. 3 Singles
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College men's tennis team topped visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland, 6-3, in a non-conference match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shoremen upped their record to 5-8 with the win, while the Seahawks slipped to 11-7 with the loss.
The Shoremen secured the first point of the match via an 8-3 win by sophomores Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall) over John Feighner and Jay Guzzone at No. 2 doubles. St. Mary's evened the score with an 8-6 win at No. 1 by Andrew Gear and Mark Hardesty over junior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and sophomore Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's). Washington pulled in front when junior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) and senior Andrew Pearson (Flourtown, PA/Springfield Township) pulled out a 9-8(1) victory at No. 3 over Wyatt Paulishak and Robert Bishop.
The Shoremen increased their lead to 3-1 when Cywinski beat Hardesty, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, but the Seahawks countered with a 6-3, 6-1, win by Gear over Rajes at No. 1. Novick brought the Shoremen to within a point of clinching the match by completing a 6-2, 6-1, win over Guzzone at No. 4 and Holtschneider made it official with a 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over Feighner at No. 3. Pearson added a 6-2, 6-1, win over Paulishak for the Shoremen at No. 5, while Bishop defeated junior Hunter Scott (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford), 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6 for the Seahawks' third and final point.
The Shoremen return to action Friday with a 3:30 p.m. non-conference match at Salisbury.
