FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Host Mary Washington, the 25th-ranked team in Division III and fifth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, defeated visiting Washington College, 9-0, in a non-conference men's tennis match today in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improved to 10-9 overall with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 4-8 with the loss.
In doubles, Donato Rizzolo and Evan Charles, the region's fourth-ranked doubles team, beat junior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and sophomore Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's), 8-3, at No. 1, Tyler Carey and Kaleb Nugyen downed sophomores Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall), 8-5, at No. 2, and Alex Blakhin and Dave Lunding-Johansson trumped junior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) and senior Andrew Pearson (Flourtown, PA/Springfield Township), 8-2, at No. 3.
Carey, the region's ninth-ranked singles player, beat Rajes, 6-3, 6-1, at the top of the singles line-up. Sam Wichlin added a 6-0, 6-0, win over Cywinski at No. 2, Charles downed Holtschneider, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3, Lunding-Johansson topped Novick, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 4, Nguyen beat Pearson, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5, and Will Apperson defeated junior Hunter Scott (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) at No. 6 by a 6-0, 6-0, final.
The Shoremen return to action Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. non-conference home match against St. Mary's.
