Shoremen Overcome 2-1 Deficit After Doubles
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College overcame a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to pull out a 5-4 Centennial Conference men's tennis win over visiting Muhlenberg College this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shoremen improved to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play with the win, while the Mules fell to 2-3 and 1-1.
Washington's lone doubles win came at No. 3 where junior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) and senior Andrew Pearson (Flourtown, PA/Springfield Township) beat Derrick Eng and Ben Berkowitz, 8-5. Daniel Lakham and Max Blumenthal bested junior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and sophomore Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's), 8-5, at No. 1 and Eric Chavis and Jason Teitelbaum downed sophomores Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall), 8-2, at No. 2.
Cywinski was a 6-2, 6-1, winner over Blumenthal at No. 2 singles. Washington added wins in the bottom three singles spots to take the match. Holtschneider beat Berkowitz, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4, Novick downed Chavis, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5, and Pearson topped Dylan Ander, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 6. For Muhlenberg, Lakham beat Rajes, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 and Teitelbaum beat Boaté by retirement after winning the first set, 7-5.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Ursinus.
