Lions Drop Shoremen, 8-1

Holtschneider Wins at No. 4 Singles for Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting The College of New Jersey, the 12th-ranked team in the Northeast region, ran its record to 9-0 this season with an 8-1 non-conference men's tennis victory over host Washington College this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shoremen fell to 3-5 with the loss.

Marc Nichols and Howard Telson led off singles with an 8-1 win over junior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and sophomore Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) at No. 1. Jordan Cruz and Jack August increased the lead to 2-0 with an 8-3 victory against junior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) and senior Andrew Pearson (Flourtown, PA/Springfield Township) at No. 3.

TJ Riley and Pierce Cooper completed the doubles sweep for the Lions with a 9-8(1) win over sophomores Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall) at No. 2. 

TCNJ's lead grew to 4-0 when Boaté retired after dropping the first set to August at No. 3 singles, 6-0. The Lions clinched the match when Riley completed a 6-0, 6-0, win over Cywinski at No. 2. Cooper then beat Pearson, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6, Telson bested Novick, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5, and Nichols downed Rajes, 6-3, 7-6(3), at No. 1. Washington picked up a point in the last match to finish as Holtschneider knocked off Billy Buchbinder, 4-6, 6-1, 11-9, at No. 4.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Muhlenberg.
