Boaté Wins in Singles and Doubles
NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- Host Christopher Newport won the first four singles matches to finish in a 5-4 non-conference men's tennis victory over visiting Washington College this afternoon. The Captains evened their record to 4-4 with the win, while the Shoremen slipped to 1-2 with the loss.
The Shoremen held a 2-1 lead after doubles. The Captains picked up the first point of the match as Will Sloan and Robbie Wagner beat junior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) and senior Andrew Pearson (Flourtown, PA/Springfield Township), 8-4, at No. 3. Washington answered with an 8-4 win by sophomores Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and Ryan Holtschneider (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall) over Lloyd Luck and Joey Manilla at No. 2 and an 8-6 win by junior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and sophomore Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) over Kyle Tobin and Chiraag Shetty at No. 1.
Christopher Newport clinched the match, 5-2, by posting four quick singles wins. Tobin beat Cywinski, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2, Shetty beat Rajes, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1, Joona Rahko bested Pearson, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6, and Wagner downed Holtschneider, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4. Washington won the final two singles matches to finish as Boaté beat Manilla, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 and Novick topped Sloan, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 5.
The Shoremen return to action March 23rd with their Centennial Conference opener, a 3:00 p.m. home match against McDaniel.
