FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Junior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) and senior Andrew Pearson (Flourtown, PA/Springfield Township) won B3 Draw doubles to lead the Washington College men's tennis team at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, hosted by Mary Washington, yesterday and today.
In B3 Draw doubles, Novick and Pearson defeated Elizabethtown's Billy Freitag and Cole Turula, 8-2, in the first round. In the quarterfinals, they beat Ferrum's Chris Miller and Conner Moncure, 8-5. In the semifinals, Novick and Pearson topped Juniata's Brice Morey and Justin Wisniewski, 8-2. The Shoremen duo captured the draw with an 8-6 win over Kyle Feeley and Justin Wisniewski in the final.
In B3 Draw singles, Novick advanced to the semifinals. He downed Elizabethtown's Turula, 8-0, in the first round and beat Franklin & Marshall's Samuel Stone, 8-1, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he lost to Tyler Arsenault of Ursinus, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6.
In B2 Draw doubles, sophomores Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and Ryan Holtschneider (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall) also reached the semifinals. They defeated Nigel Hopkinson and Ross Raddi of Penn State-Altoona, 8-1, in the first round. In the quarterfinals, they beat Salisbury's Shane Gunther and Demetri Verahnos, 8-6. In the semifinals, Boaté and Holtschneider lost to Haverford's Andy Dougherty and Sloan Millman, 8-6.
Sophomores Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) and Boaté competed in Championship Draw singles. In the first round, Rajes lost to Tanner Brown of Johns Hopkins, 6-2, 6-2, while Boaté fell to Mary Washington's Alex Blakhin, 6-1, 6-4. In the first consolation round, Rajes topped Gettysburg's Chris Curran, 8-1, while Boaté was eliminated by Christopher Newport's Chiraag Shetty, 8-6. In the second consolation round, Rajes beat Washington and Lee's John Kirby, 6-4, 1-6, 10-8. In the consolation quarterfinals, Rajes downed Daniel Albers of Salisbury, 4-6, 7-6, 10-7. Rajes did not play in the consolation semifinals, which were not scheduled until Monday.
In B1 Draw singles, Holtschneider lost to Carnegie Mellon's Harsha Rao, 8-4, in the first round. In the consolation quarterfinals, Holtschneider lost to Christopher Newport's Robbie Wagner, 4-6, 6-2, 11-9.
In B2 Draw singles, junior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) fell to Carnegie Mellon's Joel Lankford, 8-4, in the first round. In the consolation quarterfinals, Cywinski lost to Elizabethtown's Paul Whitman, 6-1, 6-2.
In B5 Draw singles, Pearson lost to Grove City's Andrew Deckert, 8-6, in the first round. In the consolation quarterfinals, Pearson bounced back with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Penn State-Altoona's Steven Ly. Pearson's singles run ended in the consolation semifinals with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Randolph-Macon's Jody Cox. He did not play in the final, which was not scheduled until Monday.
In the Championship Draw of doubles, Cywinski and Rajes lost in the first round, 8-2, to Christopher Newport's Shetty and Kyle Tobin. In the first consolation round, they lost to Elizabethtown's Eric Fritzges and Josh Riehl, 8-2.
