Papen, Cywinski Win in Singles
EWING, NJ -- The College of New Jersey swept doubles and won four of the six singles matches to post a 7-2 non-conference win over visiting Washington College this afternoon in Ewing, NJ. The Lions, who are ranked 12th in the Northeast region, improved to 8-3 with the win, while the Shoremen, who are ranked 11th in the Atlantic South, fell to 8-5 with the loss.
In doubles, Howard Telson and Stewart Fernandez were 8-6 winners over seniors Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) and Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) at No. 1. TJ Riley and Steven Fernandez added an 8-5 win over sophomore Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and freshman Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) at No. 2, while Marc Nichols and Jordan Cruz defeated freshman Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and graduate student Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai), 8-4, at No. 3.
The Lions' wins in singles were turned in by Steven Fernandez, Nichols, Telson, and Gabe Allen. Fernandez beat Ellison, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2, Nichols defeated Rajes, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3, Telson topped Boaté, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 4, and Allen downed senior Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6. The Shoremen got a win at No. 1 singles as Papen defeated Riley, the Northeast's 23rd-ranked singles player, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3, at No. 5 where Cywinski beat Stewart Fernandez, 6-3, 7-5.
The Shoremen return to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Swarthmore.
