Shoremen Compete at ITA Regionals, Mount St. Mary's Invitational

Cranford Reaches Third Round of Singles at ITA's

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Four members of the Washington College men's tennis team competed at the ITA Southeast Regionals, hosted by Mary Washington, yesterday and today.  Senior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) advanced to the third round of championship singles to lead the Shoremen's effort.  Another eight Shoremen competed at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational this weekend.

Cranford, who was seeded seventh, opened championship singles with a 6-1, 7-5, win over Swarthmore's Preston Poon and then went on to defeat Mary Washington's Kevin Aquino, 6-1, 6-4, in the second round. In the third round, Cranford lost to German Gonzalez of Johns Hopkins, 6-1, 6-2.  

Also in championship singles, junior Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) beat Swarthmore's Max Kaye, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round before falling to top-seeded Eric Shulman of Christopher Newport, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round.  Junior Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) lost to third-seeded Sam Wichlin of Mary Washington, 6-1, 6-4 and Haverford's Andy Dougherty, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.  Junior Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) lost to Christopher Newport's Matt King, 6-3, 6-4, and was unable to play his consolation match due to injury.

In championship doubles, Ellison and Lisco lost to Haverford's Will Garrett and Hailiu Yang, 8-2, in the first round.  They then beat Swarthmore's Seth Udelson and Mark Wee, 8-5, in the first consolation round before falling to Christopher Newport's Dustin Nelson and Lorenzo Sison, 8-2, in the consolation quarterfinals.  Cranford and Papen were unable to play their scheduled championship doubles matches due to injury.

Mount St. Mary's Invitational

At the Mount St. Mary's Invitational, junior John Menzione (Chadds Ford, PA/Kennett) led the way for the Shoremen by finishing fourth in Flight A Singles.  Menzione defeated Gettysburg's Terry Keegan, 6-3, 2-6, 10-5, before falling to Mike Salomon of Mount St. Mary's, 4-6, 6-2, 11-9, in the semifinals.  In the third-place match, Menzione lost to Loyola's Keyan Sanai, 6-1, 6-0. Also in Flight A Singles, senior Kristian Wilson (Germantown, PA/home school) lost to Matt Blake of Mount St. Mary's, 6-1, 6-1, and Gettysburg's Chris Curran, 6-0, 6-1, before losing to Keegan, 6-1, 6-1, in the seventh-place match.

In Flight B Singles, sophomores Graham Kaltman (Harleysville, PA/Germantown Academy) and Andrew Pearson (Flourtown, PA/Springfield Township) each lost their first two matches before meeting in the seventh-place match. Kaltman lost to Loyola's Dan D'Agostino, 6-1, 6-0, and Gettysburg's Mike McLaughlin, 6-0, 6-1, while Pearson fell to Loyola's Bobby Gorczakowski, 6-0, 6-3, and Gettysburg's Tom Gosnell, 6-3, 6-2. In the seventh-place match, Pearson beat Kaltman, 6-2, 6-4.

In Flight C Singles, freshmen Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and Willie Dashiell (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Collegiate) each went 0-2 before meeting in the seventh-place match. Cywinski lost to Loyola's Connor Lisco, 6-0, 6-0, and Gettysburg's Johnny Nelson, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6, while Dashiell lost to Andrew Marinucci of Mount St. Mary's, 6-1, 7-6(2), and Will Brinks of Gettysburg, 6-3, 7-5. In the seventh-place match, Cywinski beat Dashiell, 8-4.

In Flight D Singles, sophomore Jack Taylor (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) and freshman Hunter Scott (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) each lost their first two matches before meeting in the seventh-place match. Taylor fell to Gettysburg's Joe Fortenbaugh, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6, and Jastin Mostowtt of Mount St. Mary's, 6-3, 7-6(5), while Scott lost to James Bartolozzi of Mount St. Mary's, 6-3, 6-2, and Gettysburg's Mike Pratt, 6-1, 6-3. In the seventh-place match, Taylor downed Scott, 6-1, 6-4.

The teams of Menzione and Kaltman and Cywinski and Wilson competed in Flight A Doubles. In the first round, Menzione and Kaltman lost to Loyola's Pierce Norton and Kevin Zingler, 8-3, while Cywinski and Wilson lost to Sanai and Gorczakowski, 8-4. In the consolation semifinals, Menzione and Kaltman lost to Salomon and Mike Zabetakis, 8-1, while Cywinski and Wilson beat Gosnell and Brinks, 8-5. In the fifth-place match Salomon and Zabetakis beat Cywinski and Wilson, 8-1.  In the seventh-place match, Gosnell and Brinks beat Menzione and Kaltman, 8-4.

The teams of Pearson and Dashiell and Scott and Taylor competed in Flight B Doubles. In the first round, Pearson and Dashiell fell to Lisco and Ryan Fitzgerald, 8-0, while Scott and Taylor lost to Marinucci and Patrick Plastow, 8-3. In the consolation semifinals, Pearson and Dashiell lost to Mostowtt and Justin Olexa, 9-7, while Scott and Taylor fell to McLaughlin and Nelson, 8-1.  The seventh-place match in Flight B Doubles was not played.
