Gabriel Gives Shoremen First Win Over Gettysburg Since 2003

Junior Scores Game's Only Goal in 73rd Minute of 1-0 Win

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior forward George Gabriel (Cambridge, England/Hinchingbrooke School) scored the game's only goal in the 73rd minute as host Washington College defeated visiting Gettysburg College, 1-0, in a Centennial Conference men's soccer game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shoremen (2-3, 1-1 Centennial) picked up their first win over the Bullets (3-4, 0-2) since 2003.

In a defense-oriented first half, Gettysburg held a 4-2 advantage in shots. Gabriel finally broke the scoreless tie at 72:43 when he fired a shot high that went off the crossbar, was attempted to be covered by Gettysburg goalkeeper Connor Darrell, and rolled into the back of the net.  Sophomore midfielder Bob Libera (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) was credited with the assist on the goal.

Gettysburg had two late chances to even the score, but James Rice sent a shot wide right past an open goal at 81:39 and Washington senior goalkeeper Tyler Cabot (Hightstown, NJ/Peddie School) made a diving save to his left on a free kick by Tyler Shaffer at 83:59.

Washington picked up the win despite being outshot, 11-4, in the game. Gettysburg also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Cabot made four saves in the shutout for Washington, while Darrell made one in the loss for Gettysburg.

The Shoremen's last win over the Bullets was a 1-0 victory on October 18th, 2003. Washington played to a 2-2 double-overtime draw with Gettysburg in 2005.

The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Haverford.
