Sophomore Scores Game's Lone Goal in 26th Minute
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Sophomore forward Sam Wild (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West) scored the game's only goal in the 26th minute as host Washington College defeated visiting Randolph-Macon, 1-0, in the men's soccer season opener for both schools this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
Wild scored from the right of the goal off a cross from sophomore midfielder Chris Nardo (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex). Randolph-Macon notched the first five shots of the game before Wild scored on Washington's first shot of the contest. The Yellow Jackets held a 6-3 advantage in shots in the half.
Randolph-Macon had 11 more shots in the second half to the Shoremen's three in the period, but still could not find the back of the net. Fernando Rochi had a shot stuffed by senior goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) on a breakaway at the 80:48 mark.
Phipps finished with seven saves in the win for Washington. Each team had three corner kicks in the game.
Washington improved to 5-1 in season openers under head coach Drew Hoffman with the win.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. home game against Salisbury.
