Wolverines Best Shoremen, 5-1
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Wesley College jumped out to a 3-1 halftime lead en route to a 5-1 victory over host Washington College in a non-conference men's soccer game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
Wesley (5-10-1) scored 4:25 into the game when Kyle Long knocked in a rebound of a shot by Nico Scarpato after a diving save by Washington junior goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's). The Shoremen (3-10-1) tied things up when sophomore midfielder Justin Geho (Westminster, MD/Cardinal Gibbons) scored on a free kick at 9:11. Frank Buffa put the Wolverines back in front when he scored after receiving a long cross from wide right of the goal off the foot of Long at 17:47. Josh Chelleh made it 3-0 when he scored in transition at 26:55. Wesley goalkeeper Brian Zuber left the game at the 38:23 mark after enduring a hard fall and was replaced by Mark Mattern.
Kennon McMahon scored Wesley's fourth goal off a double assist from Long and Chelleh at 63:56. Michael Monticchio added the Wolverine's fifth goal at 77:00.
Phipps made eight saves in the loss for Washington. Zuber made one save for Wesley before leaving the game; Mattern added four for the Wolverines. Wesley held a 20-16 advantage in shots in the game. Washington held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday when they host Centennial Conference rival Ursinus College at 2:00 p.m. on Senior Day.
