Men's Rowing Season Preview

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — After taking a step back last spring, the Washington College men's rowing team looks to re-establish itself as the top small-school rowing program in the region under first-year head coach Scott Wisniewski as the Shoremen embark on their spring regatta schedule.

The Shoremen impressed at the Head of the Charles regatta back in the fall with a 25th-place finish in the collegiate four against some of the top crews in the country. That mark was their best finish in that event in nine years. Junior coxswain Alex Kincaid (Bowie, Md./DeMatha), senior rowers Chris Eggstein (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) and Samson Ramasamy (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), and sophomore rower Brook Yimer (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) were in that crew and are among the Shoremen's most decorated student-athletes. Kincaid and Eggstein competed in the varsity four at the 2016 IRA National Championships. Eggstein and Yimer earned All Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) varsity and novice honors last year, respectively. All four have been in the Shoremen's top boat for all or most of their collegiate careers.

Junior Lee Potter (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and freshmen Schaefer King (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Grayson Searles (Richmond, Va./Douglas S. Freeman) joined the five student-athletes above in the Shoremen's top eight this past fall. Junior coxswain Karl Melchior (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park), senior rower Tom Heffernan (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), junior rower Tyler Buchanan (Santa Clarita, Calif./West Ranch), sophomore rowers Drew Harville (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) and Matt Underwood (Claymont, Del./Salesianum), and freshman rowers Evan Koch (Marlton, N.J./Doane Academy) and Ben Masclans (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) each competed in the Shoremen's second eight at least once in the fall. Senior Hank Zhu (Xuencheng, China) and freshmen Charles Snyder (Stonington, Conn./Fishers Island School [N.Y.]) and Bennett Truitt (Chestertown, Md./Worcester Prep) round out the Shoremen's roster.

Wisniewski also welcomes Danielle Huston Hakey, a former standout rower and 2017 graduate of the College, to his staff as an assistant coach.

The Shoremen will make their spring regatta debut March 31st at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia. Following that will be a road regatta at La Salle, a trip to the Kerr Cup, and a road regatta at St. Mary's. This year's MARC Championships will be held April 28th at Gifford Pinchot State Park in Lewisberry, Pa. The Shoremen are slated to compete at the historic Dad Vail Regatta May 11th and 12th.
