Shoremen Win Third-Level Final at IRA Championships

Shoremen Also Win Semifinal, Finish 13th Overall

West Windsor, N.J. — The Washington College men's rowing team won the third-level final of the varsity four, taking 13th-place of 28 boats overall in the event, on the final day of the IRA the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships. This year's IRA National Championships were held Friday, yesterday, and today, on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The Shoremen, who also won their C/D semifinal yesterday, raced head-to-head exclusively against crews from Division I schools during their four races at the regatta.

How It Happened
- The Shoremen opened competition in a seven-boat heat on Friday, finishing sixth in 6:55.790. California won the heat in 6:35.290, Georgetown was second in 6:42.190, Dartmouth third in 6:46.200, Yale fourth in 6:46.880, Navy fifth in 6:52.430, and Santa Clara seventh in 7:07.860. California advanced directly to the A/B semifinals by winning the heat.
- The Shoremen then finished fourth of six boats in a repechage race Friday to advance to the C/D semifinals. The Shoremen completed the course in 6:50.290. Cornell won the race in 6:42.140, Georgetown was second in 6:45.720, Stanford third in 6:49.160, Brown fifth in 6:53.020, and Fairfield sixth in 7:18.300. Cornell and Georgetown advanced to the A/B semifinals, while Stanford and Brown joined the Shoremen in qualifying for the C/D semifinals. Fairfield advanced to the fifth-level final with its sixth-place finish.
- The Shoremen's winning semifinal time of 6:36.780 on Saturday closed out a close race as less than four seconds separated the top four boats. Columbia was second in 6:39.260, Jacksonville third in 6:39.770, Dartmouth fourth in 6:40.490, Temple fifth in 6:47.420, and Drexel sixth in 6:49.330. The Shoremen, Columbia, and Jacksonville qualified for the third-level final, while Dartmouth, Temple, and Drexel qualified for the fourth-level final.
- The Shoremen won the third-level final this morning in 6:44.990. Columbia was second in 6:46.610, Navy third in 6:47.960, Brown fourth in 6:448.200, Marist fifth in 6:49.010, and Jacksonville sixth in 6:58.330.
- The University of Washington won the men's varsity four by finishing first in the grand final in 6:35.490. Princeton was second in 6:38.030 and California third in 6:40.040. Marietta, which was sixth in the petite final in 6:53.800 for 12th-place overall was the only crew from non-Division I school to place higher than the Shoremen overall.
