Shoremen Win Conference Championship
Varsity Eight Claims MARC Title, WC Wins Points Trophy
YORK COUNTY, PA -- The Washington College men's rowing team won the overall points trophy and the Shoremen's varsity eight captured the conference championship at the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference Championships today in York County, PA.
The varsity eight won its race against three other boats to win the MARC Championship. The Shoremen finished in 6:21.0. Mary Washington was second in 6:36.1, Franklin & Marshall third in 6:36.9, and Rutgers-Camden fourth in 7:00.1.
The second varsity eight won its two-boat event against Mary Washington, winning by 41.4 seconds. The varsity four was second in its three-boat event in 7:08.5. Mary Washington won the race in 7:03.5, while Rutgers-Camden was third in 7:32.5.
Senior Springer Harris (Huntingtown, MD/Northern) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's varsity eight. Senior Kevin Rodriguez (Fort Collins, CO/Fort Collins) sat stroke, junior Reno Smith (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) was in the seven seat, senior Brian Gamble (Gibson Island, MD/Holderness School, NH) sat in the six seat, freshman Parker McIntosh (Berlin, MD/Worcester Prep) was in the five seat, junior Michael Zaborskiy (Novosibirsk City, Russia/American School of Bangkok, Thailand) sat in the four seat, senior Brandon Riker (Marlboro, VT/Twin Valley) was in the three seat, junior Will Herland (Seattle, WA/Lakeside School) sat in the two seat, and freshman Robert Storck (Wilton, CT/St. Mark's School, MA) was the bow.
Freshman Jeff Nutting (Catonsville, MD/Mount St. Joseph) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's second varsity eight. Freshman Lawrence Baker (Shady Side, MD/Southern) sat stroke, freshman Mitch Witherow (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) was in the seven seat, freshman Kyle Benk (Bloomsburry, NJ/Phillipsburg)sat in the six seat, freshman Joe Hemphill (Lexington, VA/Blue Ridge School) sat in the five seat, freshman Sam Hartman (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was in the four seat, freshmanThomas Newton (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Huntingtown) was in the three seat, freshman Ryan Bankert (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) sat in the two seat, and freshman Josh Smith (Annapolis, MD/Southern) was the bow.
Junior Susanne Vaughn (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's varsity four. Senior Andrew Newell (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) sat stroke, sophomore Sean Harrison (Richmond, VA/Hazleton Area, PA) was in the three seat, sophomore Miqdad Annab (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) sat in the two seat, and senior Dan Pierce (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) was the bow.
The Shoremen return to action May 7th and 8th at the Dad Vail regatta in Philadelphia.
