McAuliffe Scores Two Goals in Win
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Sophomore attack Claire McAuliffe (Clarksville, MD/Glenelg Country School) scored two goals as the host Washington College field hockey team seized control of what was a scoreless game at halftime by scoring three times in the second half of a 3-0 win over visiting Stevenson tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
The Shorewomen (5-4) held a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 6-1 advantage in penalty corners in an offensively limited first half.
Washington dominated possession for much of the second half and finally got on the scoreboard on their 18th shot of the game when McAuliffe redirected in a ball sent by senior midfielder Kristen Wille (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) with 19:12 to play. McAuliffe scored her second goal of the night to give Washington a 2-0 cushion when she finished off a well-played pass across the circle from junior midfielder/defender Heather Noto (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) with 7:23 remaining. The assist was the first of Noto's collegiate career. Wille tacked on Washington's third and final goal with 1:17 on the clock, stealing the ball back from a defender and blasting a ball in from the center of the circle.
Washington finished with a 16-4 advantage in shots in the second half for a 22-7 margin for the game. The Shorewomen also finished the contest with 15 penalty corners to Stevenson's two.
Junior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) made five saves for Washington en route to her second shutout of the season. Katie Cavanaugh made seven saves in the loss for the Mustangs (4-5).
The Shorewomen return to action in eight days with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Swarthmore.
