Wolverines Handle Shoremen In Delmarva Contest, 8-3
Matthews Totals Two Hits For Washington
DOVER, DE – Host Wesley downed visiting Washington College, 8-3, on Tuesday night at Schutte Park in non-conference baseball action between the Delmarva schools. The Wolverines improve to 27-12, while the Shoremen drop to 24-10.
Washington scored twice in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Junior Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) scored on a sacrifice fly by senior John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum) for the game's first run and freshman Scott Matthews (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco Prep (NJ) came home on an RBI groundout to shortstop off the bat of junior Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South).
The Wolverines struck back with a two-run home run to centerfield by Morgan Rupp with one away that also scored Jon Carlson to even the score at 2-2.
Wesley took a 3-2 lead in the last of the fifth when Rupp singled up the middle with two away to plate Rob Benedict. In the bottom of the sixth, Benedict singled to right with two outs to drive in Matt Robles from second and gave the Wolverines a 4-2 lead.
Rupp scored on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Steven Perone to give Wesley a three-run lead.
Washington cut it to 5-3 in the top of the eighth when sophomore Jon Mahaffey (Sykesville, MD/Century) stole third base and scored on a throwing error. In the bottom of the eighth the Wolverines scored three times to put the game away. Robles scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3 with one out. Benedict scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Rupp for the seventh run. Carlson came home on an infield single by Geoff Kimmel to make it 8-3.
Rupp sparked the Wesley offense with a 3-for-4, four RBI, two run effort, while Kimmel had four hits in five at-bats with an RBI. Benedict went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Carlson scored twice. Wesley had 11 hits in the win. On the mound, Jeff Cochran got the win and improves to 3-2. He went five innings, allowing four hits and two runs.
Matthews went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Shoremen. WC had seven hits in the game. On the mound, sophomore Tim Perrotta (Roseland, NJ/West Essex Regional) took the loss and drops to 1-1.
The Shoremen conclude their regular season on Saturday afternoon in a Centennial Conference doubleheader at Muhlenberg. First pitch is slated for 12:30 p.m.
