2009 ANNAPOLIS, MD -- The 20th-ranked Washington College sailing team finished eighth of eight teams at this weekend's Captain Prosser Trophy, the MAISA Team Race Championships, hosted by Navy. Washington finished with a 2-12 race record at the event. Second-ranked Georgetown won the event with a 14-3 record, fourth-ranked St. Mary's was second at 12-5, and 13th-ranked New York Maritime was third at 11-6. The top three finishes qualified for the ICSA Team Race Nationals. Junior skipper Conner Blouin (Tampa, FL/Jesuit) and sophomore crew Caroline Hill (Tiverton, RI/Bishop Stang), senior skipper Derek Packard (Excelsior, MN/Breck) and junior crew John MacLellan (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville), and senior skipper Seth Olson (Branford, CT/Branford) and freshman crew Hannah Beekman (Wakefield, RI/South Kingstown) sailed for Washington. Freshman Mildred Conroy (Newton, MA/Tabor Academy) and freshman Michael Whitford (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) were the team's spares. Saturday's racing began with rain and a 10-15 knot northerly which built to over 20 knots by mid-afternoon. Sunday's races sailed in a 12-15 knot northwesterly which built to 18-22 for the championship round. The Washington College sailing team will compete at the America Trophy, the MAISA Spring Championships, next weekend at New York Maritime. |
