WC to Open Season Nationally-Ranked

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Sailing World Preseason Co-Ed College Rankings were recently released and the Washington College sailing team will begin the fall 2007 season ranked 14th in the nation. This is the highest preseason national ranking the WC sailors have received since opening the fall 2003 season ranked 11th. This year's team is perhaps Washington's most experienced squad ever. Six seniors, five of them four-year sailors, return for WC, the most in the program's varsity history.

Among the team's seniors are Alex Hood (Newport, RI/Portsmouth Abbey), Washington's top skipper a year ago, skipper and crew Meredith Dodd (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair), team captain, and Shrijana Puri (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase), one of Washington's top crews each of the past two years. Among the other returners are sophomore Conner Blouin (Tampa, FL/Jesuit), the team's second skipper from last year, and sophomore crew Krista Hankins (Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Regional), who was named her team's Most Improved Sailor last year.

Washington won four regattas last year and finished the spring 2007 season with a seventh-place performance at the America Trophy, the MAISA Spring Co-Ed Championships

The Washington College sailing team opens the fall 2007 season September 8th and 9th at four regattas, including the Anderson Trophy, a co-ed intersectional regatta hosted by Yale University.

St. Mary's (MD) was tabbed first in the preseason rankings, followed by Boston College in second and Yale in third. The College of Charleston, the two-time defending ICSA Co-Ed Dinghy Championship team, was ranked 11th, following the graduation of two All-American skippers. The full rankings appear below.
