voted for the "Most Amazing Performance" of WC Athletics in 2008. Here
are the results of the poll. FIRST PLACE
- 177 votes October 31st - Men's Soccer Brian Schultz scores the overtime
game-winner as the Shoremen stun nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins. Schultz
closed out his collegiate career by scoring the only goal of the game at the 93:40
mark to give the Shoremen their first win over the Blue Jays since 1992, ending
a 15-game losing skid to Hopkins. Washington had dropped five-straight one-goal
decisions to Hopkins coming into the game. The victory was actually the second
breakthrough win for the Shoremen in 2008; earlier in the month they defeated
Muhlenberg, 2-1, for their first win in 22 all-time meetings with the Mules. SECOND
PLACE - 106 votes February 22nd-24th - Women's Swimming Megan
Morse wins seven medals, including four golds, at the 2008 Centennial Conference
Championships. Morse won three individual gold medals in the 200 individual
medley, 200 freestyle, and 100 freestyle. Her time of 53.23 in the 100 freestyle
broke the school record. Morse also swam on the gold medal-winning 800 freestyle
relay, silver medal-winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, and bronze-medal
winning 200 freestyle relay. Three of those four relays also broke school records.
Morse went on the earn All-America status at the NCAA Division III Championships
the following month. THIRD PLACE - 69
votes November 1st - Field Hockey Jaimie Barlow scores the game-winning
goal with 24.4 seconds left to clinch a Centennial Conference playoff berth for
the Shorewomen. Barlow's goal broke a 2-2 tie with Dickinson in the regular-season
finale to put the resurgent Shorewomen back in the conference playoffs for the
first time in four years. The Shorewomen, who were picked 10th of 11 teams in
the conference's preseason poll, won nine of their first 10 games of the season
and went on to be the fourth seed in the conference playoffs, beating Dickinson
again in the tournament's first-round game. FOURTH
PLACE - 56 votes April 26th - Women's Rowing The varsity eight completes
an undefeated in-region season by winning the Mid-Atlantic Division III
Regional Championship. The Shorewomen out-paced Franklin & Marshall, North
Park, Richard Stockton, and Rutgers-Camden in their semifinal and then beat Mary
Washington, Marietta, and Franklin & Marshall in the grand final to run their
in-region record to 15-0. The Shorewomen were rewarded with an at-large eight
bid to the NCAA Division III Championships, marking the program's first-ever NCAA
Championship berth. FIFTH PLACE - 49
votes May 9th & 10th - Men's Rowing The Shoremen's lightweight four
finishes fourth at the prestigious Dad Vail regatta. The
lightweights capped off an outstanding season with an impressive performance at
the Dad Vail. The Shoremen were second in their heat and second in their semifinal
before finishing behind Mercyhurst, Brock, and Santa Barbara in the finals. Ashleigh
Genevich served as coxswain of the lightweight four. Hugh McAdam sat stroke, R.
Scott Jones was in the three seat, Brian Gamble sat in the two seat, and Matt
Icenroad was the bow. 26 votes February
20th - Men's Basketball The Shoremen combine with Swarthmore to break the
NCAA Division III record for combined three-point field-goal percentage as
the Shoremen defeat the Garnet, 94-91. Washington shot 11-of-15 from long range
in the game, while Swarthmore shot 13-of-23. The combined 24-of-38 performance
(63.2%) from three-point range by both teams bested the old Division III record
of 22-for-35 (62.9%) set by Simpson and Dubuque on February 22, 2003. Washington
made its final eight three-pointers of the game. Tim Kohlrus scored 29 points
in the win and shot 4-of-5 from long range. 24
votes November 1st&2nd - Sailing Conner Blouin posts his sixth consecutive
top-four divisional finish, skippering WC to a fourth-place finish in
A Division at the War Memorial, the MAISA Fall Championships. Blouin
opened the season sailing with Krista Hankins to win A Division at the Cornell
Fall Open, tie for first in A Division at the Nevins Trophy, and win A Division
at the North Fall #1. He then finished fourth in A Division with James Shepherd
at the Hobart/William Smith Fall Intersectional and second in A Division with
Hankins, Shepherd, and Oliver Barnyak at the Navy Fall Intersectional. At the
War Memorial, Blouin sailed with Hankins and Shepherd, winning two A Division
races in the fourth-place finish. 23
votes March 14th - Baseball The Shoremen score 22 runs in their 1,000th
victory, defeating Old Westbury, 22-5, in Cocoa, FL. The baseball team,
the college's oldest varsity sport, achieved a milestone win in dominating fashion,
blowing the game open with five runs in the seventh inning and eight more in the
eighth. Matt Boucher went 4-for-6 with five RBI and three runs scored in the historic
victory. Six other Shoremen recorded multiple hits in the game. 20
votes April 2nd - Women's Lacrosse The Shorewomen score 20 goals for
the second consecutive game for the first time ever as they down Haverford,
20-10. Washington had put up 21 goals - its highest total in four years - in a
win over Wesley College just three days earlier. Suzie Jakub scored her 100th
career goal for the Shorewomen in the victory over Haverford and finished with
three goals and one assist on the afternoon. Brittany Lambert fired in six goals
and assisted on another for the Shorewomen. 19
votes December 2nd - Women's Basketball The Shorewomen blow out Ursinus,
76-49, to start a season 3-0 for the first time in 13 years and break a nine-game
losing streak against the Bears. The 27-point margin of victory was Washington's
largest-ever against Ursinus, whom the Shorewomen hadn't beaten since 2003 and
hadn't beaten on the road since 2002. The victory was also Washington's first
win in a conference opener in 10 years. Meghan Tait scored 23 points off the bench
for the Shorewomen, who were up by 21 points at halftime. 16
votes March 13th - Men's Lacrosse Kolyn Kirby racks up nine points in
a win over Elizabethtown. Kirby, a Chestertown native, delighted the
hometown crowd with five goals and four assists in a 17-5 win over Elizabethtown.
Kirby tallied all five of his goals and three of his assists in the first three
quarters of the game. Kirby's nine-point outing came just five days after he scored
the game-winning goal in the Shoremen's 12-11 overtime win at Washington and Lee. 11
votes April 6th - Men's Tennis The Shoremen beat Swarthmore, 6-3, to
open the season with 11 straight wins. The Shoremen's best start in seven
years concluded with a win over the Garnet, who were ranked six spots ahead of
Washington in the regional rankings. Adam Cranford and Brian Danver won the final
three games at No. 2 doubles to post an 8-6 win and give Washington a 2-1 lead.
After Cranford won at No. 1 singles, singles wins by Todd Green and Andrew Laux,
both of which were decided by super-tiebreakers, clinched the match for the Shoremen.
6 votes March 1st - Women's Tennis
In their first home match of the season, the Shorewomen edge rival Salisbury,
5-4, inside the Lifetime Fitness Center. Washington took a 2-1 lead after
doubles play, but the Sea Gulls were still within one point at 4-3 after four
singles matches had finished. The Shorewomen clinched the match when Lydia Bull
finished a 6-0, 6-0, win at No. 5. The victory began a seven-match winning streak
for Washington, whose 7-1 start to the season was the second-best in program history.
6 votes November 12th - Men's Swimming
The Shoremen win the last relay to knock off Salisbury, 107-98,
beating their Eastern Shore rivals for the 18th straight time. The Shoremen held
a 96-92 lead in the meet heading into the final event - the 200-meter freestyle
relay - and needed a first-place finish in the event to hold on for the victory.
Chris Soper, Dylan Pollock, Phil Munger, and Dan Wentzel delivered, winning the
event in 1:41.88, .16 seconds better than Salisbury. 5
votes September 6th - Volleyball The Shorewomen beat Catholic, 25-16,
19-25, 25-23, 25-12, for their first win over the Cardinals in 10 years. The
match was tied at one set a piece with the third set deadlocked at 23-23 and Catholic
serving the ball before Washington sided out to serve for game point. Chelsea
Crum tallied the decisive kill on the final rally to put the Shorewomen ahead
two sets to one. Washington then raced out to a 9-0 lead in the fourth set before
Catholic rallied to cut it to 11-8. The Shorewomen answered by scoring the next
seven points to take control of the set and go on to win the match to break a
10-match losing streak against the Cardinals. 4
votes April 27th - Softball The Shorewomen score four runs in the bottom
of the seventh inning to beat Muhlenberg, 9-8. The two teams were tied
at 5-5 heading into the top of the seventh before a three-run home run gave the
Mules a three-run lead. Washington scored one run at a time in the bottom half
of the inning to rally, plating runs on an error, a single, and a bases-loaded
walk before Meg Travers drove in Tricia Carroll with a walk-off single to win

- Women's Soccer The Shorewomen fire off a school-record 38 shots in a 5-0
win over Trinity (DC). The Shorewomen broke the old
school record of 33 shots in a game set in 2004 as Sarah Yarbrough scored two
goals and assisted on two others and Jennifer Kiarsis had a goal and an assist.
The Shorewomen recorded 25 of their 38 shots in the second half of the game. PREVIOUS
