Fall 2008 Season Begins August 29th
Soccer, Volleyball, Field Hockey Open this Month

CHESTERTOWN, MD - Washington College field hockey, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball student-athletes return to campus August 16th to start preseason. Two weeks later, all four squads will open their 2008 seasons during the last weekend of the month. Both soccer teams kick off their respective schedules on Friday, August 29th, while the field hockey and volleyball teams open their seasons the next day.

The Shoremen soccer team will be the first WC squad to play this fall, taking the field at Stevenson University (formerly Villa Julie College) for a 4:00 p.m. game against the host Mustangs on Friday, August 29th. The Shoremen welcome back eight starters from a year ago, including two-time All-Centennial Conference selection senior forward Brian Schultz (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall).

A half hour after the men's soccer team kicks off, the Shorewomen soccer team opens its 11th varsity season with a 4:30 p.m. game against Marymount at the Wesley College Kick-Off Classic. Washington will then play host Wesley in the round-robin tournament Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The games will be the Shorewomen's first under interim head coach Julika Blankenship. The Shorewomen's two leading scorers from a year ago - senior forward/midfielder Sarah Yarbrough (Golden, CO/Arvada West) and sophomore midfielder/forward Katie Weida (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Country Day) - both return.

The Washington College volleyball team heads to Stevenson University on Saturday for a quad-match and will play Cedar Crest at 10:00 a.m., Stevenson at 12:00 p.m., and Wesley at 2:00 p.m. The Shorewomen return eight of the nine players who appeared in at least 23 matches last season, including junior setter Caitlin Ward (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), who already holds the school record for career assists.

The field hockey team will be the only Washington College squad to open the fall 2008 season at home, hosting Randolph-Macon at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen welcome back their top seven scorers from a year ago, including All-Centennial Conference selection senior midfielder Amy Spadanuta (Hackettstown, NJ/Warren Hills).
