Amazing Performance" Poll Results You
voted for the "Most Amazing Performance" of WC Athletics in 2006. Here
are the results of the poll. FIRST PLACE
- 80 votes March 4th Matt Swanson throws a one-hitter
in his collegiate baseball debut as the Shoremen shut out Neumann in
the second game of a double-header. Swanson struck out eight batters and walked
just two in the victory. Washington's bats provided a run in the first and two
more in the fourth to give Swanson support at the plate. The double-header marked
the Shoremen's first two home games of the season. SECOND
PLACE - 69 votes November 4th The men's swimming team opens its season
by defeating Gettysburg for the first time ever, winning nine of 11 events
to swim away from the Bullets, 125-79. Brothers Colin and Chris Soper and Alex
Thomas each won two individual events for the Shoremen, who came into the meet
0-13 all-time against Gettysburg. The victory marked a 142-point swing from the
previous year's meet between the two teams, which Gettysburg won, 151-53. THIRD
PLACE - 26 votes February 22nd The Washington College
men's basketball team tops Muhlenberg, 85-79, in the first round of the Centennial
Conference Playoffs behind 29 points from Joey Breslin and 22 points
from Jonathan Webb. Muhlenberg held a 67-62 advantage with 8:33 remaining, but
the Shoremen, as they had done several times during the season, rallied to score
10 unanswered points and take the lead for good with under six minutes remaining.
The win came in the Shoremen's first home playoff game in six years. 25
votes November 18th In just her second collegiate game, Jane O'Donnell
drains a school record-tying seven three-pointers to lead the women's
basketball team to a 63-54 win over Rosemont in the consolation game of Lincoln's
James A. Richardson Memorial Tournament. O'Donnell's seven three-pointers came
on just 13 attempts; she was 10-of-16 from the field overall, finished the game
with 27 points, and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Her performance marked
the fifth time a Shorewoman has knocked down seven three-pointers in a game. 21
votes October 10th Katherine O'Brien pounds down a career-high 27 kills
on her 21st birthday to lead the volleyball team past Bryn Mawr, 30-22,
33-35, 30-26, 30-20. O'Brien's 27 kills came against just six errors in 57 attempts.
She also tallied 18 digs in the victory. O'Brien just missed the Centennial Conference
record of 31 kills in a four-game match. She went on to be named to the All-Centennial
Conference second team, marking the first all-conference award for a WC volleyball
player in eight years. 15 votes September
1st Josh Todd scores the game-winner in overtime as the Shoremen win their
first game in Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium, defeating Chestnut Hill, 4-3, in
head coach Drew Hoffman's Washington College debut. The teams traded goals throughout
the game before Todd knocked in a rebound off a Brian Schultz shot in the 100th
minute to give Washington the victory. The game was the first six contests to
be played in Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium during Jammin Jesse's Opening Weekend and
made Hoffman the first WC men's soccer coach to win his debut in 59 years. 13
votes April 19th The men's lacrosse team explodes for nine second-quarter
goals in a 16-5 win at Haverford. Haverford, which enjoyed one of its
best seasons in years in 2006, came into the game looking for its first-ever win
over the Shoremen, but those hopes were dashed by halftime as the nine-goal second
quarter gave Washington an 11-3 advantage at the break. Andrew Ostrusky, Chris
Read, and Mike Sutter each scored two goals in the second quarter, as the Shoremen
scored on 64% of their 14 shots in the period. 10
votes September 9th & 10th Conner Blouin wins his division in his
first collegiate sailing regatta by taking first place in B Division
at the Riley Cup. Blouin, sailing with crew Alexandria Starks, started the regatta
off strong, winning his very first race, and went on to place first in four of
the division's 10 races and in the top five in all but two. Blouin and Starks
would go on to win A Division at the OCC Fall Open the very next weekend, giving
Blouin two divisional wins in his first two collegiate regattas. 9
votes April 14th Arturo Solis completed a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, win over Swarthmore's
Zach Rodd to give the men's tennis team a 4-3 victory over Swarthmore
in a match that was so long it had to be finished inside due to darkness. The
match score was tied 3-3 when No. 1 singles had to be moved inside with Solis
leading 4-1 in the third set. Both players held serve before the first break as
the score of the set moved to 5-2. The eighth game reached deuce five times as
Rodd prevailed in the fifth deuce to make the score of the third set 5-3. Solis
scored the final three points of the ninth game to give the Shoremen the win. 2
votes April 29th The women's tennis team records its school-record tying
16th win in the Centennial Conference Semifinals by defeating Muhlenberg,
8-1. The Shorewomen, who had pulled out a tough 5-4 win at Muhlenberg in the regular
season just eight days earlier, rolled past the Mules by sweeping through doubles
and winning five of the six singles matches. Their 16th win of the season tied
a 15-year old school record. |
