Shoremen Notch Pair of Wins
Washington Bests York (PA), Philadelphia U.

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Washington College men's tennis team won a pair of non-conference matches on the road today to improve to 5-3 on the season. The Shoremen downed York College, 8-1, in York, PA, in the morning and then traveled to Division II Philadelphia University for a 6-3 win over the Rams this afternoon.

In the match against York, Washington took two of three doubles spots to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and senior Brian Danver (Bethany Beach, DE/St. Albans, DC) were 8-4 winners against Joel Trimmer and Jeff Mansfield at No. 2, while senior Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and senior Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) posted an 8-3 victory against Paul Graci and Steve Collison at No. 3. York won at No. 1 as Tim Mowrer and Colin Jones defeated sophomore Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) and freshman Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg), 8-3.

Washington swept singles against the Spartans. Cranford defeated Mowrer, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 1, Ellison bested Graci, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2, and Green beat Trimmer, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3. Danver added a 7-6(6), 6-0, win against Collison at No. 4, Switala beat Mansfield, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5, and freshman Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) defeated Travis Klein, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 6.

Against Philadelphia University, the Shoremen also took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Cranford and Danver beat Tom McAvoy and Seppi Hutter, 8-5, at No. 2 and Green and Switala bested Mario Bermeo and Eric Guerrero, 8-0, at No. 3. The Rams won at No. 1 where Manoli Sgouros and Adrian Torroella-Cruz downed Laux and Ellison, 8-5.

The Shoremen also won four of the six singles matches against the Rams. Green beat Guerrero, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3, and Danver beat McAvoy, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4. Switala added a 6-1, 6-0, victory over Bermeo at No. 5, while Lisco defeated Hutter, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6. Philadelphia won at No. 1 as Toroella-Cruz topped Cranford, 4-6, 6-2, (10-8), at No. 1, and at No. 2 as Sgouros defeated Ellison, 6-3, 6-1.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Gettysburg and a 4:30 p.m. match at Goucher.
