22, 2009 LEWES, DE -- The Washington College men's tennis team opened the 2009 season today with a 9-0 blanking of Division II West Chester in a match played at Plantations Tennis in Lewes, DE. The Shoremen won fourth, fifth, and sixth singles by identical 6-0, 6-0, scores over the Golden Rams (0-4). Freshman Brian Cedrowski (Cedar Grove, NJ/Montclair-Kimberley Academy) and sophomore Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) defeated Jeff Rightnour and Matt Thomas, 8-6, at No. 1 in the most competitive doubles match. Senior Brian Danver (Bethany Beach, DE/St. Albans, DC) and sophomore Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) were 8-2 winners over John Howanski and Alan Day at No. 2, while senior Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) and freshman Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) posted an 8-1 win over Michael Ensor and Jon Gordon at No. 3. Cranford topped Rightnour, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Ellison beat Thomas, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2, while Cedrowski bested Howanski, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 3. Danver blanked Day at No. 4, Switala shut out Michael Ensor at No. 5, and Laux blanked William Ensor at No. 6. The Shoremen return to action Friday with a pair of matches in Birmingham, AL. Washington will play at Birmingham Southern at 2:00 p.m. Central Standard Time and at Division I Alabama-Birmingham at 5:00 p.m. Central Standard Time. |
