2009 SWARTHMORE, PA -- Host Swarthmore College, the 12th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, swept doubles and won four of six singles matches to down visiting Washington College, 7-2, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match this afternoon in Swarthmore, PA. The Garnet improved to 6-6 overall and 4-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 7-5 and 2-2 with the loss. The most competitive doubles match came at No. 3 where Maxwell Bressman and Eric Legunn downed WC senior Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and senior Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD), 8-6. Kevin Shaughnessy and Zak Kelm posted an 8-2 win over sophomore Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) and freshman Brian Cedrowski (Cedar Grove, NJ/Montclair-Kimberley Academy) at No. 1, while Stephen Youngblood and Mark Wee downed sophomore Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and senior Brian Danver (Bethany Beach, DE/St. Albans, DC), 8-2, at No. 2. Cranford and Green recorded the Shoremen's wins in singles as Cranford bested Youngblood, 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (14-12) at No. 1 and Green beat Wee, 7-6, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 4. Shaugnessy downed freshman Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg), 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2, Kelm beat Cedrowski, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3, Mark Greenburg bested Switala, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 5, and JJ England defeated Danver, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6. The Shoremen return to action Monday with a 5:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Muhlenberg. |
