30, 2007 FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Freshman Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) won the B1 singles draw to lead the Washington College men's tennis team at the ITA Southeast Regionals, hosted by Mary Washington, this weekend. The Shoremen went 22-13 overall in singles and doubles matches at the tournament. Cranford topped Tripp Weber of Johns Hopkins, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8, to open play in B1 singles. Cranford then bested Zach Detweiler of Mary Washington, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Cranford downed Methodist's Mike Roth, 1-6, 6-2, 10-7. In the final match, Cranford defeated Jake Schneiders of Johns Hopkins, 6-1, 6-2, to win B1 singles. Junior Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) downed Muhlenberg's John Osborne, 7-5, 6-3, in the first round of B2 singles. In the quarterfinals, Green defeated Swarthmore's Michael Hsieh, 6-1, 6-1. Green then won against Hampden-Sydney's Jeffreys Harrell, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals, before losing to Christopher Newport's Ricky Connor, 6-0, 6-0, in the final. Sophomores Timothy Parks (Geneva, Switzerland/College du Leman) and sophomore Derek Wise (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) competed in B6 singles. Wise blanked Kenneth Nugent of St. Mary's, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round, while Parks trumped Muhlenberg's Wayne Mitchel, 6-4, 6-7, 10-4. In the quarterfinals, Wise was a 6-2, 6-3, winner over Cabrini's Duff O'Connor, while Parks beat Alexander Djinis of St. Mary's, 6-3, 6-0. In the semifinals, Wise topped Methodist's Dylan Knox, 6-4, 6-1, while Parks fell to Dave Kaluzavich of King's, 7-5, 6-3. Kaluzavich then beat Wise, 6-4, 6-4, in the final. Freshman Jon Keller (Frederick, MD/Frederick) opened play in B5 singles by defeating Jeffrey Levy of St. Mary's, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round and cruising past David Boe of King's, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. Keller lost to Grove City's Ricky Garrett in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-1. In B4 singles, freshman Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) fell to Methodist's Andrew Fletcher, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round before beating Roanoke's Alex Lyons, 6-1, 6-2, in the consolation quarterfinals. Laux lost in the consolation semifinals to Methodist's Matthew Taylor, 6-0, 6-4. In Championship singles, junior Rafael Roldan (Quito, Ecuador/Academia Cotopaxi) lost to Scott Melideo of Scranton, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round and fell to Peter Vale of Johns Hopkins, 6-1, 6-2, in the first consolation round. Keller and Parks opened B2 doubles by defeating Rob Currier and Tariq Sheikh of Methodist, 8-6 in the first round and getting past Franklin & Marshall's Noah Bachow and Brett Joseph, 9-8(6), in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Keller and Parks lost to Mary Washington's Govinda Avasarala and JJ Proffitt, 8-3. In Championship doubles, Roldan and Green upset second-seeded Scott Burtzlaff and Brendan Kincaid of Salisbury, 8-5, in the first round, before falling to the Carnegie Mellon tandem of Yiran Liu and Alex Nemerov, 8-4, in the second round. Wise and junior Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School) played in B3 doubles. In the first round, they fell to Franklin & Marshall's Josh Calo and Paul Salierno, 8-4, but they bounced back to defeat the King's tandem of Kaluzavich and Povi Schmidt, 8-2, in the consolation quarterfinals. In the consolation semifinals, Wise and Switala bested the Muhlenberg duo of Mitchel and Jason Kirschenbaum, 8-0. Wise and Switala then won the consolation final against Virginia Wesleyan's Tommy Popomaronis and Tim Sanford, 8-2. Cranford and Laux teamed in B1 doubles, falling to Tadd Hatcher and Nelson Bunn of Washington and Lee, 8-3, in the first round and beating Elizabethtown's Bryan Metz and Brok Walker, 8-4, in the consolation quarterfinals. Cranford and Laux then lost to Salisbury's Sasha Felikson and Giorgio Athans, 9-8, in the consolation semifinals. |
