#22 Blue Jays Hand Shoremen First Loss, 9-0

BALTIMORE, MD -- Host Johns Hopkins University, ranked 22nd in Division III and third in the Atlantic South region, handed visiting Washington College, ranked 18th in the Atlantic South, its first loss of the season today as the Blue Jays topped the Shoremen, 9-0, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match. Hopkins improved to 8-5 overall and 5-0 in conference play with the win, while Washington fell to 11-1 and 4-1.

Casey Blythe and Joe Vasoontara, the top-ranked doubles team in the region, blanked junior Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and freshman Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai), 8-0, at No. 1 doubles. Andrew Wang and David Maldow bested freshman Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and junior Brian Danver (Bethany Beach, DE/St. Albans, DC), 8-3, at No. 2, while Rafael Roberti and Matt Naftilan defeated junior Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School, MD) and freshman Jon Keller (Frederick, MD/Frederick), 8-2, at No. 3.

Maldow, the second-ranked singles player in the region, handed Cranford his first loss this spring with a 6-4, 6-3, triumph at No. 1. Vasoontara bested Switala, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2, while Wang, ranked 15th in the region in singles, downed Laux, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3. Blythe added a 6-4, 6-3, victory over Green at No. 4, while Peter Vale beat Danver, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5. Roberti rounded out singles with a 6-1, 6-0, win against Keller at No. 6.

The Shoremen are back in action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Muhlenberg.
