2008 BALTIMORE, MD -- Top seed and host Johns Hopkins defeated fourth-seeded Washington College, 5-0, in a Centennial Conference semifinal match. The Blue Jays, ranked 15th nationally and sixth in the Atlantic South region, improved to 14-5 with the win. The Shoremen, ranked 12th regionally, fall to 14-3 with the loss. The Blue Jays won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Casey Blythe and Joe Vasoontara, the fifth ranked doubles tandem in the region won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles over junior Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and freshman Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai). David Maldow and Andrew Wang won at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-1 against freshman Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and junior Brian Danver (Bethany Beach, DE/St. Albans (DC). Matt Naftilan and Rafael Roberti won at No. 3 doubles by an 8-2 margin versus junior Michal Switala (Redlo, Poland/Gunston Day School (MD) and freshman Jon Keller (Frederick, MD/Frederick). In singles, Wang won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles against Laux to make it 4-0 Hopkins. The Blue Jays clinched the match when Roberti downed sophomore Timothy Parks (Geneva, Switzerland/College du Leman) 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. The 14 wins for Washington is a six-win improvement from the 2007 season. |
