Shoremen Compete at Centennial Invitational
Roldan & Green Advance to Doubles Semifinals

HAVERFORD, PA -- The Washington College men's tennis team opened its fall 2007 schedule this weekend at the Centennial Conference Invitational hosted by Haverford College. Six Centennial schools took part with Johns Hopkins, Dickinson, Franklin & Marshall, and Muhlenberg joining Washington and host Haverford.

Junior Rafael Roldan (Quito, Ecuador/Academia Cotopaxi) and junior Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) were seeded third in doubles. They received a bye in the first round before besting Robbie Goldwein and Dan Zakheim of Muhlenberg, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. Roldan and Green fell to top-seeded Alex Buxbaum and Tom Kinrade of Haverford, 9-8(0) in the semifinals.

Freshman Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and freshman Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) opened doubles with an 8-4 win over John Osborne and Jonathan Farber of Muhlenberg in the first round before falling to second-seeded David Maldow and Andrew Wang of Johns Hopkins, 8-1, in the quarterfinals.

Cranford opened singles play with a 6-4, 0-6, 10-8 win over Armen Vartan of Franklin & Marshall. He then lost to Kinrade, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Green fell to Maldow, the top singles seed, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round of singles, while Roldan lost to Hunter Holbrook of Dickinson, 6-2, 6-4. Green defeated Goldwein in the first consolation round, 8-1, while Roldan bested Ben Hart of Franklin & Marshall, 8-4. In the consolation semifinal round, Green lost to Vartan, 8-4, while Roldan bested Trevor Heck of Dickinson, 8-5. In the consolation final, Roldan fell to Vartan, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.

Green was named the co-winner of the tournament's Sportsmanship Award.

The Shoremen return to action at the ITA Southeast Regionals, to be held September 29th-October 1st at the University of Mary Washington.
