2, 2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visiting Widener University won seven of the eight contested events en route to a 101-87 non-conference men's swimming victory over host Washington College this evening at Casey Swim Center. The Pride improved to 4-1 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 2-3 with the loss. Junior Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA/Benedictine Military) won the 200 butterfly for the Shoremen in a Washington College season-best time of 2:06.43. Swimming as an exhibition, freshman Nick Longworth (Media, PA/Strath Haven), junior Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield), sophomore Matt Violette (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook), and senior Dan Wentzel (Exton, PA/Henderson) posted the fastest time in the 400 freestyle relay, turning in a WC season-best mark of 3:24.47. Longworth was second in both the 200 freestyle (1:53.08) and 200 backstroke (2:03.03). Violette was second in the 200 individual medley in a WC season-best time of 2:07.90, while Wentzel was second in the 1000 freestyle in a WC season-best 10:46.28 and Soper was second in the 50 freestyle (23.14). Wentzel's time in the 500 freestyle, which was the third-fastest in the race and earned first-place points as Widener entered the event as exhibitions only, clocked in at a WC-season best of 5:09.74. Freshman Johnny Helenek (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) time of 2:25.21 in the 200 breaststroke moved him up to ninth-fastest in school history in that event. The Shoremen return to action Saturday, January 3rd, at the Orange Bowl Swim Classic in Key Largo, FL.
