8, 2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visiting Gettysburg College won 10 of the 11 events en route to a 149-55 Centennial Conference men's swimming victory over host Washington College this afternoon at Casey Swim Center. Freshman Nick Longworth (Media, PA/Strath Haven) captured the 200 backstroke for the Shoremen in their season opener. Longworth's winning time of 2:02.24 in the 200 backstroke made him the Shoremen's seventh-fastest swimmer ever in the event. He also swam a 57.07 lead-off leg in the 400 medley relay to become Washington's ninth-fastest swimmer ever in the 100 backstroke. Junior Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and sophomore Matt Violette (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook) each posted one individual second-place finish for the Shoremen. Soper was second in the 50 freestyle in 23.06, while Violette was second in the 1000 freestyle in 10:49.64. A pair of Washington freshmen cracked the school's top 10 all-time list in the 200 breaststroke. Austin Auger (McLean, VA/Langley) was third in 2:24.77 to become the Shoremen's eighth-fastest swimmer ever in the event, while freshman Johnny Helenek (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) was fourth in 2:26.40 to become the Shoremen's 10th-fastest swimmer ever in the event. The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference meet at Salisbury.
