"By George," Shoremen One-Up Mustangs, 1-0
Freshmen Connect for Game's Only Goal

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Freshman defender Brandon George (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) scored the game's only goal in the 65th minute of the game as host Washington College defeated visiting Stevenson, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.

Neither team managed to get on the scoreboard in the first half, but Stevenson held an 11-3 advantage in shots in the period.

George provided all the scoring the Shoremen would need when he scored from right in front of the goal off a pass from the right side of the field delivered by freshman midfielder Jon Evans (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) at 64:22.

The Mustangs got off 13 shots in the second half to Washington's four, including nine after George's goal, but Washington sophomore goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) and the Shoremen defense made the lead stand up. Phipps made 10 saves in the game, including four after the Shoremen took the lead.

The victory was Washington's first at home since a 4-0 win over Haverford on October 24th, 2007, breaking a streak of nine straight home losses. Oddly, the Shoremen had gone 6-5 away from home since their last victory in Chestertown.

The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. game at Goucher.
