No Trick, One Big Treat: WC Shocks #10 Hopkins
Schultz Scores OT Game-Winner in 1-0 Victory

BALTIMORE, MD -- The script could not have been any better for the Washington College men's soccer team on this Halloween night. Senior forward Brian Schultz (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) closed out his collegiate career by scoring the only goal of the game at the 93:40 mark to give the visiting Shoremen a 1-0 overtime victory over 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins in the regular-season finale for both teams. Schultz's golden goal lifted Washington (5-11, 3-6 Centennial) to its first win over the conference-playoff bound Blue Jays (11-4-3, 5-2-2) for the first time in 16 years, snapping a 15-game losing skid against Hopkins.

Schultz intercepted a pass and scored on a low shot from the right side. "Someone played the ball in to a defender and I challenged him. When I got the ball, I just hit it near post. The rest is kind of a blur," said Schultz of his game-winner.

Hopkins held a 6-3 advantage in shots in a scoreless first half that saw Washington freshman goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) make five of his career-high 14 saves. The Blue Jays got off 14 shots in the second half to three for the Shoremen, but Phipps made nine more saves, including one on a shot by Kevin Hueber at 89:57, as the game headed into overtime with no score. Schultz's goal came on the only shot by either team in the extra session.

The Blue Jays, who got five saves from Matt Mierley, finished with a 21-7 advantage in shots in the contest and recorded all five of the game's corner kicks. Washington was whistled for 14 fouls in the game, while Hopkins was whistled for nine. There were six offside calls, four of them on the host team.

Washington's last win over Hopkins came in 1992 when the Shoremen were winners by a 5-2 final. Since then, nine of the Shoremen's 15 losses against the Blue Jays - including the last five in a row, had come by one goal.

"I couldn't have picked a better way to go out," added Schultz, a team captain and two-time All-Centennial Conference selection. "This is a great win for the program heading into next year."
