October 29,
2008 HAVERFORD, PA -- Visiting Washington College scored twice in the first half and held off host Haverford for a 2-1 Centennial Conference men's soccer victory this afternoon in Haverford, PA. The Shoremen improved to 4-11 overall and 2-6 in conference play with the win, while the Fords fell to 3-9-3 and 0-6-2 with the loss. Senior forward Tony Armiger (Glen Arm, MD/Loch Raven) gave the Shoremen a 1-0 lead at 2:29 when he beat a defender and lofted the ball in the goal. Washington took a 2-0 advantage on an own goal when a Haverford player sent a ball back to Haverford goalkeeper Adam Care, who had come out of the net. The ball went over Care's head and into the net at 15:51. Max Stossel put the Fords on the board with a goal off a pass in the box from Tyler Freeman at 79:38 to cut the lead to 2-1. The Shoremen were able to hold the Fords at bay the rest of the way, however, to come away with the win. Washington held a 13-9 advantage in shots in the game, while the Fords enjoyed a 6-1 margin in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) made two saves for Washington, while Care had seven for Haverford. The Shoremen close out their 2008 season Friday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins.
